Well, a major clue, I’d think, was the not-really-exactly-spectrum they found in the warehouse. Second, the human shadow-shiver fusion. Third, the high security of the facility (already expected, remember?).
I’m sure I missed about a dozen more clues as to why this orphanage is more-than-meets-the-eye dangerous.
So, yeah, he may be cocky sometimes but he’s no fool where danger estimation comes into play.

Great writing, btw. I won’t mention the art again, as I have long since run out of superlatives.
